Acai Berry Information

The acai (pronounced ah-SIGH-ee) berry is a popular new fruit that is making headlines around the world. Okay, actually it’s not a new fruit. It’s a fruit that has been around for thousands of years, but most of us are just now learning of its existence because it’s grown in a remote part of the world.

Where Acai Comes From

Hailing from the tropical Amazon rainforests of Brazil, along the Amazon river, the acai berry is a small fruit that is a dark purplish color (although there are some varieties that are green), grows in clusters, and looks somewhat similar to grapes. It grows on tall, thin trees known as acai palms.

The acai fruit contains a large seed (about 80 percent of the fruit) that is extracted from the fruit, and then the fruit is generally freeze-dried, or the juice is extracted, and the juice and remaining pulp may be used separately. The fruit spoils quickly and must be used or preserved within 24 hours of harvesting.

The seeds can be utilized for multiple purposes - extracts are removed for use in other products, and the seeds may be ground up and used in organic soil compounds or livestock feed. The hearts of the palm are used in salads, and of course, the palm branches are utilized as a weaving material for baskets, thatched roofs, and many other purposes. The wood from the tree trunks is even used for building.

Since the Amazon jungles are so remote, it wasn't until the early 21st century that freeze drying capabilities became available in the region, making it possible to export the acai berry and it’s juice, pulp, and extracts to other parts of the world. And that’s why the acai berry is big news now.

Studies on Acai Berry

As word of the acai berry spread, both scientists and health experts have taken a keen interest in studying the fruit, analyzing its nutrients, and determining its healthful benefits. So far, the acai berry is being compared very favorably to other healthful fruits like blueberries and cranberries, healthy juices like pomegranate and concord grape, and even red wine due to is antioxidant qualities.

Several different research studies were conducted on this fruit, with the scientific findings published in reports that revealed the following information about the acai berry:

Other research studies published indicates the acai berry protects cells from oxidative damage and has anti-inflammatory properties. Also, drinking an acai juice blend increased blood plasma antioxidant levels - within two hours after consumption.

Studies continue, but it’s fair to say the acai berry is another healthy addition to the fruit and vegetable food group that you may want to include in your range of options for daily consumption. Remember, the recommended daily allowance is 1 to 2 cups of fresh fruits daily for every child and adult age 2 and over (serving size may vary depending on the fruit and what is considered a cup).

Rich in antioxidants, high in fiber and the good fatty acids, acai berries can be a part of a healthy diet and will contribute to better digestion, higher metabolism, and your body’s ability to absorb nutrients. The acai berry is found in the United States in various products such as juices and smoothies, drink powders, health drinks, and as a dietary supplement.
