In today’s age, more and more people are becoming health-conscious and making an attempt to eat the right foods and exercise routinely. This is important as we learn even more diseases and risks associated with obesity and poor health. As you may know, antioxidants play a vital role in keeping our body healthy, and the acai berry is now being called a top antioxidant fruit.

You may be wondering why antioxidants are so important. Well, these antioxidants fight off free radicals that roam our body. If you leave these free radicals unchecked, they can cause damage to healthy cells and lead to illness, disease, and other adverse health effects. Free radicals are also believed to be one of the main causes of aging.

It is important that we get these antioxidants from a food source, such as acai berry, because our bodies don’t produce them on their own. Certain fruits, vegetables, and even fish, have shown to have a high amount antioxidants. But, studies have shown the acai berry to have nearly ten times the antioxidants as a grape. Now that’s pretty powerful!

Along with it’s already high nutritional makeup, the acai berry is shown to have a very potent antioxidant present called anthocyanins. These chemicals known as anthocyanins are actually what gives the berry its bright purple color, but it also acts as one of the most powerful and potent forms of antioxidants. The amount of anthocyanins present in the berries are nearly 30 times the amount in red wine.

A Brief Overview of The Antioxidant-Rich Acai

The acai palm is a member of eight species of palm trees native to Central and South America, growing mainly in swamps and floodplains, such as the Amazon region. The fruit resembles a dark grape, though with less pulp and a larger seed inside. Growing in clusters, two crops of fruit are produced by an acai palm each year. This tasty and antioxidant-rich food has comprised nearly 40% of the diet of the native Caboclo peoples for generations, as well as existing as a valuable trading commodity for the local economy. Ground to a meal, it is used as livestock food and organic fertilizer for future planting. Even the seed is used as jewelry be the locals.

Research into this promising fruit will continue as its benefits reveal themselves under scientific scrutiny. But, with studies already showing such a high level of antioxidants, you can be sure this fruit will stay in the spotlight for sometime to come.
